Galleries
A gallery puts a set of images and videos on one screen as an animated grid. Use one to show a folder of event photos on a wall, fill a lobby display with a mosaic, or tile a logo into a branded backdrop.
A gallery is a library asset, so you cast it the same way as any other asset. It plays on Vū Media Server walls, the Web Player, the Vū Studio Player desktop app, the Display Dashboard preview, and Experience Sessions.
You can make a gallery in two ways, and both make the same kind of gallery:
- In the Gallery app: pick the images and videos yourself. See Creating a Gallery in the Gallery App.
- From a Library folder: right-click a folder and choose Create Gallery. See Creating a Gallery from a Folder.
Galleries made either way are listed together in the Gallery app.
Opening the Gallery App
The Gallery app is at one.vu.studio/galleries.
To get there from anywhere in Vū Studio, click the Vū Studio icon to go Home, then click the Gallery tile ("Turn photos into one screen and cast it"). You can also type "gallery" into the search bar at the top of the app.
The app shows every gallery you have as a card. Each card shows:
- a thumbnail (the first image in the gallery)
- the gallery's look, such as Grid or Mosaic · Lens
- how many items the gallery holds
- when it was last edited
If you have no galleries yet, the page says No galleries yet and offers two buttons: New gallery and Open the Library.
Creating a Gallery in the Gallery App
- Open the Gallery app at one.vu.studio/galleries (Vū Studio icon → Gallery).
- Click New gallery in the top-right corner.
- Type a name in the Gallery name field at the top.
- Click Add media. A panel opens with your library on the left and an In this gallery list on the right.
- Click an image or video tile on the left to add it. Each item you add appears in In this gallery, numbered in order. To take an item out, click the × on its thumbnail.
- Click Done to close the panel.
- Choose a look (see Choosing the Look) and set the order (see Setting the Order). The Preview area shows the gallery as you build it.
- Click Save.
The counter next to the name field shows how many items the gallery holds out of the 100 allowed, for example 24 / 100 items. Galleries created in the app are saved to the top level of your library.
To leave without saving, click Cancel, or the back arrow next to the name field.
Creating a Gallery from a Folder
To turn a whole Library folder into a gallery in one step:
- Open the Library at one.vu.studio/library. From Home, click the Vū Studio icon → Asset Library.
- Go to the folder that contains the folder you want to use.
- Right-click the folder tile and choose Create Gallery (Beta). You can also select the folder and choose Create Gallery from the
...menu in the top-right corner of the content area. - If the folder holds anything other than images and videos, a message titled Some assets won't be included tells you how many items will be left out. Click to continue, or cancel.
A message confirms that the gallery was created. The new gallery:
- takes the folder's name
- is saved next to the folder, in the same parent folder
- shows up in the Gallery app as well
What to know:
- Only the folder's own images and videos are used. Items in subfolders are not included, and other file types are skipped.
- Permissions: you need Owner or Editor access to the folder, and you can create a gallery from one folder at a time.
- Size limit: a gallery holds up to 100 items. If a folder holds more than that, the gallery is not created. It is never cut down to the first 100.
- A gallery is a snapshot. It keeps the items that were in the folder when you created it. Adding images to the folder later does not change the gallery.
- To refresh a gallery, run Create Gallery on the same folder again. The existing gallery is updated in place with the folder's current contents, and no second copy is made. This also replaces any changes you made to that gallery's item list in the Gallery app. When you edit a gallery that was made from a folder, the editor reminds you of this.
Choosing the Look
The bar above the preview has three settings. Each one can be changed without affecting the other two.
Arrangement controls how the items are laid out:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Grid | Crops the cells to an even grid, with a gentle ambient motion. |
| Mosaic | Shows every photo once, uncropped, filling the display. |
| Repeat | Tiles the images across the display. One logo becomes a backdrop, and a few photos become a dense wall. |
When you choose Repeat, a Tile size slider appears. It sets how wide each tile is, as a percentage of the display's width (4% to 50%). The number of tiles depends on the size of the screen, so one gallery fills a wide wall, a portrait kiosk, or a preview card without extra setup. Repeat tiles are a backdrop, so clicking them does not open anything.
Motion controls the ambient animation:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| None | Nothing moves. The best choice for a wall where movement is distracting. |
| Fade in | Cells appear in a cascade, once, when the gallery opens. This is the default. |
| Drift | A slow float, with each cell out of step with its neighbors. |
| Ken Burns | A slow zoom in and out. |
| Wave | The float, timed so it reads as one wave crossing the display. |
| Sheen | A slow sweep of light across the whole display. This uses the least processing power on a large wall. |
Hover controls what happens when a mouse or air mouse points at a cell:
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| None | No hover effect. |
| Lift | The cell rises off the surface and brightens. |
| Zoom | The picture scales up inside its frame. The grid never shifts. |
| Lens | The cell swells, its neighbors move aside, and the rest of the gallery dims. |
Hover effects need a pointer. On a touch screen, or a wall with no mouse or air mouse, the Lens moves across the gallery by itself after a quiet period. It hands control back as soon as someone moves a mouse. Lens is not available for a gallery with only one item.
You can also change the look of an existing gallery from the Library. Select the gallery asset and click the Edit asset info (pencil) icon in the toolbar. The same Arrangement, Motion, and Hover settings are there, and changes save as you make them.
Setting the Order
The Order strip below the preview lists every item, numbered. The order decides which image appears where.
- Drag a thumbnail to a new position.
- Use the ‹ and › arrows on a thumbnail to move it one place earlier or later.
- Click × to remove an item from the gallery. The file stays in your library.
- Click Add media at the end of the strip to add more items.
Each item can appear in a gallery only once.
Organizing Your Galleries
In the Gallery app:
- Search: type in the Search galleries box to filter the list by name. If nothing matches, click Clear search to see every gallery again.
- Sort: choose Last edited (the default) or Name.
- Edit: hover over a card, or tab to it, and click Edit to reopen the gallery in the editor.
- Delete: click the trash icon on a card. Deleting a gallery cannot be undone, but the images and videos in it stay in your library.
Galleries are also library assets, so you can manage them from the Library like any other asset:
- Filter to galleries: use the Galleries filter in the Library to show only galleries.
- Move, copy, and favorite: right-click a gallery in the Library to use Move to, Copy to, or Toggle Favorite, just as you would with any asset. See Asset Actions.
- Sharing: access follows the folder the gallery is in. Anyone who can view the gallery sees all of its items, even if they could not open the original source folder.
Casting a Gallery
- From the Gallery app: connect to a player, then hover over a card and click Cast. If no player is connected, the button is disabled and says Connect to a player first.
- From the Library or the Display Dashboard: cast the gallery asset like any other asset.
A gallery can also be used in a scene, a scheduled playback, a saved theme, or an Experience Session.
Browsing a gallery on screen:
- Click a cell to open it full screen. Use next and previous, or swipe, to move through the items, and close it to go back to the grid. This works on the Web Player and the Vū Studio Player desktop app, and on a Vū Media Server wall with a mouse or air mouse.
- On a wall with no input device, the gallery plays as an animated mosaic.
- In the Remote, the arrow buttons move between cells, the center button opens the selected cell, and Reload refreshes the gallery.
Limits and Tips
- Up to 100 images and videos per gallery.
- A gallery made from a folder does not update by itself. Run Create Gallery on the folder again to refresh it.
- To make a branded backdrop, put your logo in a folder, create a gallery from it, and choose Repeat.
- If a wall has been showing a gallery since before midnight and some images stop loading, press Reload in the Remote.
