Vū Media Server on macOS & Linux (Beta)

The Vū Media Server is available as a public Beta on macOS and Linux, letting you run the media server on Mac or Linux hardware in addition to the existing supported platforms.

Beta: Features and stability on macOS and Linux are still being refined. We welcome your feedback.

The Beta is a desktop application that plays your Vū Studio content on the machine it runs on. It signs in with your Vū Studio account and connects to Vū Studio the same way the media server does on other platforms, so you can cast content and manage playback as usual — now on a Mac or Linux computer.

Downloading​

Download the Beta build for your platform — macOS or Linux — from your account, then open the downloaded file to begin installation.

Builds are produced for:

  • macOS — as a .dmg installer or a .zip.
  • Linux — as an AppImage or a .deb package.

A Windows build also exists (a standard installer and a portable single-file executable), though this Beta page focuses on macOS and Linux.

Choose the format that matches your platform, download it, and open it to install.

Running the Media Server​

Launch the Vū Media Server on your Mac or Linux machine and sign in with your Vū Studio account. Once running, it connects to Vū Studio the same way as on other platforms, so you can cast content and manage playback as usual.

What to expect when you run it:

  1. Launch the app. An installed (packaged) build opens full screen on the primary display — the same behavior as a dedicated display player. During development it can run in a window.
  2. Sign in with your Vū Studio account.
  3. Once connected, it behaves like your other players: cast content to it and manage playback from Vū Studio.

The Beta caches media on disk, so content it has already loaded can continue to play even without a network connection.

Known Limitations​

As a Beta, some capabilities may not yet be fully available on macOS or Linux. If you run into an issue, send us feedback so we can address it in a future update.

Known Beta limitations:

  • Unsigned builds. The Beta installers are not yet code-signed or notarized. On macOS, the system may warn that the app is from an unidentified developer the first time you open it; you may need to approve it in your security settings.
  • No automatic updates yet. Auto-update is not available in this Beta — you update by downloading a newer build. This is planned for a later release.
  • Single display. The Beta runs on a single display.
